Muntons, the Stowmarket-based malt and malted ingredients manufacturer, have invested in the very latest manual handling equipment for their malted ingredients warehouse. The warehouse has been designed with very narrow aisles and pallet racking over 9 meters, so a specialist truck was required, which Linde provided with their K Range Very Narrow Aisle Combi Truck.
The truck supplied to Muntons is a wire-guided, man-up truck. The new fork lift truck is designed so when working in narrow aisles it is steered using a wire guidance system which ensures safe working clearances between the truck and racking are maintained. The warehouse has also been fully mapped and using radio frequency identification (RFID) tags on the floor so that the truck knows which aisle, and what position in each aisle, it is located. This allows the truck to be programmed to avoid any overhead obstructions, slow down and stop at the end of aisles or any walkways.
The new truck is designed to lift the operator and load while travelling in the aisle, making the truck safer and more efficient in operation. It has been fitted with Linde Blue Spot lighting front and rear, providing a visual warning to pedestrians. Other benefits of Combi trucks include having the ability to order pick an individual item from pallets and the ability to barcode scan a rack label and product at the same location helping to increase stock accuracy.
The battery on the truck has been specifically sized to suit the Muntons operation, which perfectly meets Muntons environmental demands, and importantly the battery is charged using electricity generated on-site through their anaerobic digester plant. The Linde K Range is also fitted with battery regeneration when both lowering and braking and with the addition of a high-frequency charger the amount of energy required to charge the truck has been greatly reduced.
Linde was selected as Muntons chosen supplier as their forklift trucks have proven reliability, offer bespoke options and an excellent aftersales service.
Nicki Milner, Muntons Warehouse Manager said: “It was extremely beneficial to have involved our team members in the selection process, as these guys are the experts who drive the truck on a daily basis. I am confident that the new truck meets both the business and operator needs”
