A MOU for Singapore’s first local part-time logistics degree program was signed on October 28, 2008 between SIM University (UniSIM) and the Singapore Logistics Association (SLA). The signatories were Professor Koh Hian Chye, Dean, UniSIM’s School of Business, and Mr Quek Keng Liang, Chairman, SLA and Executive Director, Keppel Logistics
The Bachelor of Science in Logistics and Supply Chain Management, said to be the only dedicated logistics degree program to be offered by a local university in Singapore, is being offered on a part-time basis here. This academic credential is targeted at existing logistics industry employees with diploma qualifications who are keen on upgrading their skills to assume management positions, as well as working professionals seeking a mid-career switch.
In his welcome address, Professor Tsui Kai Chong, Provost, UniSIM, enthused that it was the mission of the university to produce “industry-ready human resource”, adding that adult students could immediately apply what they learn and not need to wait till graduation to be useful to their employers.
Prof. Tsui also noted that the SLA’s involvement in developing the curriculum for the three-year BSc in Logistic & Supply Chain management ensures industry relevance of both curriculum and graduates.
According to Singapore’s Economic Development Board (EDB), the country’s logistics industry is a key industry, accounting for some 9.4% of Singapore’s GDP last year and employing 180,000 people. The Republic aims to go beyond operational supply chain functions such as sourcing, procurement and network optimization, to developing next generation supply chain solutions that could take the industry to the next level. To achieve this, well-trained industry professionals are needed. Currently, about 600 students graduate each year with a logistics diploma from the country’s polytechnics; a further 500 industry professionals are likely to upgrade through securing a degree. These form the potential pool of students for the UniSIM-SLA program.
