Beumer Supplies Baggage Conveying System for Frankfurt Airport
As part of construction of the new Northwest runway at Frankfurt Airport, Terminal 1 is to be extended by a new departure gate. The airport owner and operator, Fraport AG, has commissioned Beumer, supplier of intralogistics systems, to provide the necessary equipment for the extension of the baggage conveying system. The order of about 25 million euros is one of the most important orders in its company history, says Beumer
The extension work at the airport has been under way since January 2009. An additional handling rate of six million passengers per year from departure gate A is to be realised at Terminal 1. The new departure gate A comprises seven additional airport building positions for Airbus A380 aircraft and three additional apron positions. It is important to the airport operator, explains Beumer, that the time for changing planes of 45 minutes is kept after completion of the airport extension, and these are stringent requirements that are to be fulfilled by the baggage conveying system.
Within the scope of the new extension, Beumer will now supply a conveying system with a length of about 7.3 kilometres for Terminal 1, enabling the transport of outbound baggage in containers. This system will be equipped with about 1,650 drive units, 1,930 conveying elements and 110 switch units and merges. Installation will start in the next few months and handover of the system is scheduled for August 2012.
