GLOBAL TRADE MANAGEMENT

An increase in global trade provides exciting opportunities for the freight forwarding industry. But with this comes a greater level of supply chain complexity. There is now a need for freight forwarding companies to take a more strategic approach in order to create a dynamic, agile business which can react quickly to ongoing change in the world while delivering higher value services at a lower cost but with increased margin.

Over recent times there has been a lot of talk about Global Trade Management (GTM) and the benefits it brings. However, there has been little information available to specifically help logistics companies learn more about the positive impact this can have on their business.

Kewill is now offering a free GTM Infokit, which discusses the wide range of benefits and offers best practice advice on how to implement a successful GTM strategy and include content ranging from a leading analyst report, white papers, case studies and details of the global forwarding software, Kewill Forwarding.

ADVANCED PLANNING SOLUTIONS

Many companies have implemented business process projects in the past several years. These initiatives shifted the onus of uncertainty in the market to the supplier. Add to this the current rise in commodity prices and this creates pressure on margins for manufacturers. To manage these challenges effectively, an organization must be able to measure the impact of changes in demand or supply, rapidly respond to changes, and efficiently use resources.

Planvisage PP and PS software provide these capabilities by considering both material and capacity constraints simultaneously; recommending both job and purchase orders as well as creating supply-demand pegging; reducing inventory by generating plans based on a pull-based model; and decreasing resource downtime by aligning material availability to capacity.

Planvisage customers have realized results such as 10 percent improvement in on-time delivery and inventory reductions by as much as 38 percent.

REAL-TIME 3D PACKAGE MEASUREMENT

The VMS520 Volume Measurement System from SICK is an optical solution for measuring rectangular, non-rectangular and irregularly shaped objects. It can be combined with an approved-for-trade weighing system and integrated bar-code scanners for a calibrationenabled complete system.

In a typical application, two sensor heads are installed on a gate frame above conveyor belt scales, along with software for parameterisation, diagnosis and visualisation. The sensor heads each transmit a fanshaped laser beam with an angular resolution of 0.125°, and the time-of-flight of the reflected beam is evaluated in each sensor.

The measurement values of the two sensor heads are combined with one another – no additional evaluation unit is necessary for this. Supplemented with the transport speed of the, the length, height and width of each of thousands of packages per hour can be determined.

MONITOR FORKLIFT OPERATION

The ShockWatch StartManager from Stream Peak improves forklift safety and reduces damagerelated costs in the facility by restricting equipment access to trained, authorized operators while recording usage information to help minimize costly downtime, repairs, and replacements that result from overuse.

The device monitors and records operator identity so that if damage does occur, supervisors can determine accountability and respond promptly with necessary repairs or corrective action options. Optional software provides equipment access reports for supervisors.

StartManager usage reports provide information to improve fleet management. Monitoring the number of labor hours for each piece of equipment enables smarter decisions about when to rotate the fleet.
