SIX KEY ISSUES

Logistics Insight Asia, 1/7/2008

When it comes to efficient and safe dock design, there are some fundamental issues that companies need to consider:

1. Lorry access
The type of equipment needed on the dock will be determined by the length, width and height of a lorry; the type of lorry suspension; whether or not the load is unitized and fully cubed and whether the lorry is dry or refrigerated.

2. Dock conditions
Temperature and the weather can also impact the dock. Users need to consider whether they are operating in ambient or refrigerated conditions and whether the dock has an outside canopy to keep out wind, rain and snow.

3. Human resource issues
The age and experience of a workforce will determine whether you can use automated equipment or manual equipment.

4. Dock safety equipment
The type and number of lorries per day will determine what type of vehicle restraint device is used at the dock.

5. Productivity & efficiency
Having the right length and style of dock leveler, the right extendable conveyor and the right palletizing equipment will impact productivity.

6. Cost of ownership
Buying the right equipment for the application can determine how long dock equipment lasts. .
