Printronix Supports USPS Intelligent Mail Bar Code Initiative

Logistics Insight Asia - Technology & Market Trends, 23/7/2008

Printronix Inc. now supports the USPS Intelligent Mail bar code initiative mandated for adoption by May 2009. Customers deploying Printronix's P7000 series line-matrix printers, L7032 laser as well as its T5000r and T4M thermal bar-code printers will want this capability to receive discounts on bulk mail services from the United States Postal Service.

The Intelligent Mail bar code (formerly known as the 4-State Customer Barcode) is the next generation of USPS bar code technology used to sort and track letters and flats. The Intelligent Mail bar code combines the data of the existing POSTNET and the PLANET Code bar codes, as well as other data, into one unique bar code. The Intelligent Mail bar code is a type of height-modulated bar code that uses four distinct vertical bar types: Full, Tracker, Ascender and Descender.

Printronix will support the Intelligent Mail bar code on four product lines: P7000 line-matrix, T5000r thermal bar code, T4M radio frequency identification (RFID)-ready thermal bar code and L7032 laser printers. The full manufacturing release will occur in fall 2008 for all the supported product lines. P7000 series customers who would like to adopt this bar code now can order a point release of the firmware to enable their printers using part number 369224, version 2.13D.
