Lower CO2 emissions From A.P. Moller - Maersk Fleet

Logistics Insight Asia - Industry News, 4/6/2008

Last year, the A.P. Moller – Maersk target of increased energy efficiency led to a significant decrease of the CO2 emissions from the company. This applies to both container vessels and tankers. In six years, from 2002-2007, the average CO2 emissions for transport of a container has decreased by 8.9 percent. Last year alone, the decrease was approximately 3 percent.

This is described in the new “Environmental Report 2007 A.P. Moller – Maersk Vessels”. The report covers a total of 323 owned vessels, but not chartered vessels. The report also describes the A.P. Moller - Maersk environment management, the results for 2007 and the continued effort to minimize the fuel consumption and air emissions from the vessels.

The less fuel we use, the less CO2 we emit. This is good for the environment and economically beneficial to us, as environmental initiatives often go hand in hand with commercial advantages”, says Director L. Robert Pedersen, Technical Organisation, A.P. Moller - Maersk.

The environment/profit correlation is evident in that a reduction of the fuel consumption in the container business of merely five percent would result in a saving of DKK 1.5 billion at the current fuel prices and the US dollar rates.

The decreased CO2 emission is the result of a targeted innovative effort. So far it is particularly the use of larger vessels and a continued renewal of the fleet which results in the improvement. The largest PS-class container vessels, such as EMMA MÆRSK, which has room for 11,000 containers, has set a new standard for energy efficiency. These emit only half as much CO2 per container transported as the considerably smaller L-class vessels, which have room for 3,700 containers. Furthermore, the total fleet is younger, which generally means increased energy utilization. Last year alone, 30 new builds were added to the fleet.
