The Chennai Port Trust Authority recently announced that the central government has 'in principle' approved a new container terminal with a capacity to handle five million TEUs (twenty foot equivalent unit).

The port has received clearance from the union environment ministry for the Rs.31.1-billion project under build, operate and transfer programme, said K. Suresh, CPTA, in a statement released here.

An elevated expressway will be built at a cost of Rs.14.68 billion to connect the Chennai port to national highway to Bangalore and the industrial hub of Sriperumbudur, he added.

The Chennai port registered a seven percent hike in cargo handling and 27.41 percent hike in container handling, the statement said.
