All The Right Moves

New York Times journalist Tom Friedman wrote the multi-million selling “The World Is Flat” on a Dell Inspiron 600m laptop. In the book, he relates the story of the computer’s production, from the day he phones in his order to the day it gets delivered to his house in Maryland, USA.
That one phone call triggers a burst of activity as parts from multiple, global suppliers come together to be physically assembled into a working notebook at Dell’s factory in Penang, Malaysia. This “supply chain symphony”, says Friedman, is one of the wonders of the flat world.
Dell is an example of a manufacturer that became successful through developing superior logistical competence. And there are others. Take Zara, the Spanish clothing retailer. Operating in the cut-throat fashion sector, it has reduced to a matter of weeks the time it takes to get product out on to the shelves. There is always a reason to visit a Zara store as the stock changes often. In fact, most items stay on the shelf for only around a month.
