New 8-tier Storage System for Regalia Records

Logistics Insight Asia - New Products, 8/1/2008

SSI Schaefer Malaysia has recently completed an 8-tier system for Regalia Records Management Sdn Bhd located in Kuala Lumpur. It is designed for earthquake protection Seismic Zone 1 under UBC 1997 USA code, using modal and multi-spectra analysis calculation methods. Occupying 3,200 sqm floor area, the facility can now store more than 850 thousand carton boxes.
Regalia’s Management decided to invest on a seismic-proof structure in order to minimize the risk of a disaster within the facility due to an earthquake. From a marketing point of view, it would also prove to be competitively advantageous for the company in the market place.

Recently, the Malaysian Peninsula has been affected by several earthquakes originated at neighboring Sumatra and Laos. Hence, seismic-protective design for storage systems is rapidly becoming a mandatory consideration for any investment in a new facility due to the direct implications that it has on capital investment and insurance coverage.

Countries such as Philippines, Taiwan, Japan and some parts of Indonesia are considered under the “Seismic Zone 4”, while Malaysia, Singapore & South Thailand is tabulated under Zone 1. The seismic zone map is based on a statistical compilation of past earthquakes’ frequencies and magnitudes. Therefore, it is an indication of where the next earthquake is most likely to occur, how often and the enormity. It is established that the worst earthquakes usually occur in the higher seismic zones.
